The first event of the 2010 ASP World Tour is in the history books. Taj Burrow continues his incredible roll, winning three events in three starts. The Billabong Pipe Masters, The Burleigh Breaka Pro, and The Quiksilver Pro.
Round three of the Quiksilver Pro delivered the goods today. The locals were claiming it was the best Snapper Rocks in nearly a year. The remaining 32 went to town on the skatepark right point. We could see a possible finish to the event tomorrow.
The second half of Round Two of the Quiksilver Pro was a bit of a damper, literally. While hiding out from the rain in the competitors area, we snuck in a quick interview with former World Tour competitor and Quik Pro Commentator Jake Patterson.
After watching the waves deteriorate this morning through the first round of the Roxy Pro, it seemed like the call to have the men's 2nd Round was more than a gamble. But, I guess the ASP hasn't run it's luck out at the casino in Surfer's Paradise. Because, their risky call paid off big for the lucky 16 who surfed their heats in flawless head high Snapper this afternoon.
With a great start to the Quiksilver Pro, the 2010 ASP World Tour season is out the gates. This first event is the surfers response to the months of hype and speculation brought on by the surf media in the off season. One heat into the first contest can by no means answers any of these questions. But, its an attempt for the surfers, no matter how futile it may be, to silence their critics.
